Discoveries

I've just discovered that there are 3 different types of grasses:

Rhizome: These grasses extend rhizomes (underground runners) out into the soil, and new plants grow on these. Because the runners are spread underground, these grasses are very hardy and quick to grow back when worn away.

Stolon: These grasses extend stolons (aboveground runners) out across the soil, and new plants grow on these. By growing this way the grass can ‘suffocate’ other plants, which has the benefit of inhibiting the growth of weeds, but attention must be paid to stop the grass spreading to garden beds where it will do more harm than good.

Bunch grass: These grasses grow in tufts. They don’t use runners to grow and only spread by adding new blades to the sides of the tufts of grass. Although they can be quite good for high traffic areas, they will thin out into clumps if not properly maintained. Bunch grasses can’t bounce back as well as grasses with runners.
